If you want to change the world, first change yourself.
The Sikh scriptures say that you can cleanse your body with soap and water. You can cleanse your clothes with soap and water. However, the mind can only be cleansed by prayer.
To change ourselves, and travel on the road to higher consciousness, Sant Mohinder Partap Singh Ji of Guru Nanak Ashram, Patiala, India gave this advice.
In the morning, when we open our eyes, before getting out of bed, repeat 5 times, only one of the following Mantras -
All praise to the Lord. ( Christians)
Hallelujah. (Jews )
Jai Shri Krishna. (Hindus)
Allah o Akbar. (Muslims)
Jai Shri Mahaveer. (Jains)
Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. (Sikhs)
All praise to the Almighty. (For those who believe in the existence of The Unseen Force, but do not follow a religion.)
(The most elementary definition of Spiritualism — doing the same thing, at the same time, every day, meaning, discipline)
The above mantras become your Guru or guide as you find your way on the spiritual path.
“The mere mind, intellect, or other kinds of knowledge is, by itself, unable to render any help to the seeker to reach the Ultimate Goal.
A question may be raised as to how the Word or Gurshabad can help us to attain our goal? The Word is linked to the mind, and the mind, through meditation practice of the Gurshabad (Word), can establish its contact with God.
Conversely, the mind is connected with the Word and the Word is connected with God.
( Note — the Bible says, “ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1: 1)”
The above quote is by Sant Scholar Giani Naranjan Singh Ji, Shiromani Kathakar.
The only way one could reach God is by reciting only one of the above mantras. Initially, you start by reciting the above mantra only five times, before getting out of bed. As you progress, these mantras will change as also the frequency of recitation.
Please bear in mind that religion is very important. By repeating the mantra, we are not eschewing religion. Far from it. It is important to go to church, synagogue, temple, or mosque. The congregation is very important. Religion teaches us the importance of discipline. Without religious discipline, it is not possible to become spiritual.
Having said the above, it is also important to accept that our afterlife depends on our actions when we were on earth. I can abstain from eating beef all my life. However, if my actions on earth violate good behavior, I will not get salvation.
The prefix Sant is an honorific for a Spiritual Master, who is defined as someone able to travel astrally.
To be able to travel astrally, your 10th door has to be opened. The human body has 10 openings. 2 eyes, 2 nostrils, 2 ears, 1 mouth, and the 2 excretory openings. The 10th door can only be opened by the grace of The Almighty.
Astral travel allows you to have an audience with the Almighty. There are only a handful of people in this world who have managed to acquire this Grace.
When he was twelve years old, someone asked Sant Mohinder Pratap Singh Ji, “ You have come to this world for a specific mission. What is your mission?”
Sant Mohinder Pratap Singh Ji replied,
“I have come to take the crown from falsehood and give it to righteousness.
I have come to unite the religions of the world.
I have come to shower the earth with the name of the Almighty.”
If you accept that Cicero said, “the vicious thrive and the virtuous suffer”, or Diogenes, who went around, in the daytime with a lantern, looking for an honest man. You will realise that falsehood has been around for a long, long time.
The problems plaguing the world are not new. They have been around for several millennia.
The above mantras become your Guru or guide. You do not need to look for a human guru. As you progress, by the Grace of the Almighty, you will be given the next mantra. This could be through your inner voice or by reading an article. Please keep in mind that the mantras above are the most basic mantras. These mantras could also be described as being preschool syllabus.
The first rule in problem-solving is to identify the problem. These two quotations from Sant Scholar Giani Naranjan Singh Ji very succinctly define the reason the world is in such a mess.
- Many years ago, someone asked Sant Scholar Giani Naranjan Singh Ji, “All the chaos in this world, who is responsible for it?”
The Master replied, “2 classes of people who live by the principle of divide and rule. One is politicians and the other preachers.”
2. Someone asked Sant Scholar Giani Naranjan Singh Ji,
“What is the difference between Islam and the Sikh religion?”
The Master replied, “There is no difference.”
The lady was astounded at this reply and asked, “ Master, how can you say this”
The Master replied, “My daughter, I say this, simply because the Truth is One. It is only our form of worship which is different.”
The world is going through a radical transformation. The need of the hour is to accept that the former ways of thinking are not going to cut it anymore.
To change the world, it is imperative that there be a comprehensive change in our thinking towards politics and religion. A change thoroughly root and branch.
About ten years ago, my wife met someone who was given an audience by her spiritual guide. This guide told the lady, “ Owing to climate change, half the world's population will be wiped out. The half that remains would be truly God-fearing.
Acknowledgment — “If you want to change the world, start with yourself.” Gandhi
